about

Glen Campbell was my first musical influence, starting with his "Good Time Hour" TV show, and then his hit song "Wichita Lineman". I was hooked.

When I was in the group One Flew South, our producer Marcus Hummon turned me on to the Jimmy Webb version of the song, and it grabbed me all over again; Jimmy is the song's writer, and his version is gorgeous, haunting, and quietly powerful.

I worked up an arrangement of the tune, and producer Dave Matthews suggested we record it for my 19th studio release. It's a simple approach, acoustic guitar and vocal...Wichita Lineman is a song that doesn't need extra fanfare in my humble opinion, it's one of the most beautiful songs of all time.

lyrics

I am a lineman for the county
And I drive the main road
Searchin' in the sun for another overload

I hear you singin' in the wire,
I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line

I know I need a small vacation
But it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain

And I need you more than want you,
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line
