This song is one of my favorite in a long list of fantastic cuts from the legendary writer JD Souther. I met JD in the spring of 2007 while writing for the One Flew South record; it was truly a career highlight to write songs with him, and hang out listening to his crazy stories of his past adventures, many of which took place with names that have become synonymous with the term "classic".
JD was playing cuts from his new release for me one day, and when I heard this cut, it stopped me in my tracks. When the other guys in OFS heard it, they agreed, and we decided to work up a version of it. It is, sincerely, one of the finest songs I have ever been blessed to perform, and one I just had to record if given the opportunity.
Thank you JD, for the brilliance.
lyrics
Oh I like the way you bring the water
With your finger on the lime
When you walk that way it kills me
I'll be here at closing time
Is that a ring there on your finger
Or just a thin fading line
You could walk away, but don't do it
I'll be here at closing time
I'll be outside with the engine running
Carrying a coat and tie
Looking for a place to take you
I can almost hear you sigh
I'll be outside with the engine running
Pointed at the western sky
Looking for a place to lay you down
I don't want to make you cry
And I can see us walking in the future
With a child that's yours and mine
I can see the sunshine on our shoulders
Till it's closing time
Baby when you walk that way it kills me
I'll be here at closing time
