about

I wrote this cut with my good friend Levi Hummon, on a trip to Nashville in early 2014. What a wonderful ,rewarding co-write it was, writing with young artist I used to give guitar tips to as a kid, now a gifted songwriter. I love the result. a song about society's nasty habit of squeezing all it can get out of an individual , until there is virtually nothing left but a tired soul begging relief.

lyrics

Lonely scarecrow in the field
The crows come anyway
Sit upon his silence
And have their greedy way
No fear of confrontation
They peck his antique face
Until there's just the remnants
The board that held his place

He was all there was to talk to
When John returned from war
He'd lost his friends to arrows
Along some distant shore
It was too late on that Sunday
To scare those crows away
And just like all them good boys
Another soul he could not save

Those sticks they break like bones
Only whiskey warms this cold
A prayer is a heavy load
But it can't chase away the crow
He feels hellbent on helpless
Dirt in his hands
Down on one knee, eyes closed
So hard to stand
When you're hellbent on helpless
Sometimes a man gotta scare a crow

Pull them nails from plywood
Put a coffin in the grave
A soldier six foot under
The crows they fly away
These country fields feel empty
Hell hides in the shade
That cross is gettin heavy
Faces they fade

Put his faith in hoping that he can find some peace
Maybe not in this world
Those crows just let him be
