Happy Enough

about

I wrote this song in the midst of the struggles associated with a music career that kept me on the road, but underpaid, all the while filling every available time slot that I wasn't touring with teaching, to make ends meet. Needless to say, the effort was necessary yet somewhat damaging to my already challenged home life. I was to find regularly, that there was no such thing as "Happy Enough".

lyrics

I'm praying for good news, I need some today
Work's been slow, there's not much money
When I find some it dances away
Each morning's a monster that scares me awake
At that moment I'm up and running
From the black cloud that chases my day

We swam in the breeze of summer
But that dream's long gone I'm afraid
Now she's alone on most nights
As the double shifts rot me away
I have promised her a good life
But this road looks mighty rough
If I can hold on to her happy ending I'll be Happy Enough

She's my best companion, the consummate friend
She's there on the days when it rains and then pours
And dries me off in the end
Her smile is like sunshine, but struggles remain
It's hard to achieve the sun in her face when I'm working late again

We swam in the breeze of summer
But that dream's long gone I'm afraid
Now she's alone on most nights
As the double shifts rot me away
I have promised her a good life
But this road looks mighty rough
If I can hold on to her happy ending I'll be Happy Enough

Lord won't you hear this simple request
I'll keep my faith, show a good face
And hope things work out for the best

We swam in the breeze of summer
But that dream's long gone I'm afraid
Now she's alone on most nights
As the double shifts rot me away
I have promised her a good life
But this road looks mighty rough
If I can hold on to her happy ending I'll be Happy Enough
