Take a number Stand in line Join the man with the big ole house Couldn’t pay in time I see you cryin’ He’s cryin’ too You’re not the only one to lose Ain’t nothing new And I know you’ve got it bad So dust your boots off Show the world those Calloused hands Don’t let the new day Pass you by The summer wind will dry the tear from your eye Another mountain Don’t mean the end You’ve reached the top before You’ll find your way again And I know you’ve got it bad And it seems like good ain’t never comin’ back Pull your head out of the sand Dust your boots off Show the world those Calloused hands Leave the past behind And chase the morning sun From dirt to rock to asphalt You’ve laid the road you run The road you run And I know you’ve got it bad And it seems like good ain’t never comin’ back So pull your head out of the sand Dust your boots Show the world those Calloused hands

She Goes 18 03:04
Every morning she’s an artist She paints a picture Responsibility A magician in the office Money maker So much for living the dream That’s how she makes her way from Monday to Friday And then she spreads her wings She puts the roof down, wind blows, rockin’ to the radio I love it when she goes 18 She goes 18 I love it when she goes 18 She goes 18 I love it when she goes 18 She drinks the dirty martinis Like the cheap wine We drank as kids She wears her cherry flavored lipstick Like she used to For a teenage twist Could be the alcohol That helps her drop her guard Could be her need to feel more free She’s gonna dance to her favorite song Knowing I will play along I love it when she goes 18 She goes 18 I love it when she goes 18 She goes 18 I love it when she goes I love it when she goes 18 She goes 18 I love it when she goes 18 She goes 18 I love it when she goes I love it when she goes 18 I love it when she goes 18 She goes 18 I love it when she goes I love it when she goes 18 When she goes 18 I love it when she goes 18

Shameless 03:42
I’d like to think that you and I were worth a month or two Before we fell in someone else’s arms But your tears were hardly dry Before you found somebody new Moving on too fast Like a ghost in my glass I look up and there you are ‘Cause you’re shameless To bring him here tonight To the same bar where we said goodbye ‘Cause you are shameless To make me watch you kiss Wearing that same dress Baby you are shameless If you’re trying to make jealous Then you’re playing me just right Holding him while looking in my eyes I’ve never seen you look beautiful and so alive I want to turn away before my eyes betray ‘Cause you’re shameless To bring him here tonight To the same bar where we said goodbye ‘Cause you are shameless To make me watch you kiss Wearing that same dress Baby you are shameless Choking on the truth I’m just not over you ‘Cause you’re shameless To bring him here tonight To the same bar where we said goodbye ‘Cause you are shameless To make you watch you kiss Wearing that same dress Baby you are shameless Baby you are shameless Baby you are shameless To bring him here tonight To bring him here tonight To bring him here tonight

Trouble 03:55
I prayed for good times God sent me fine wine He taught me to laugh And sent me to you I prayed for happiness He went one better Threw in the heartbreak that makes our love true Trouble oh trouble still comes knockin’ Trouble oh trouble won’t stay away Trouble oh trouble there ain’t no stopping Trouble oh trouble it’s here to stay I prayed for good health He gave me an apple And a burning desire To do things my way I prayed for love And he gave me a mirror To see myself smile When your kiss makes my day Trouble oh trouble still comes knockin’ Trouble oh trouble won’t stay away Trouble oh trouble there ain’t no stopping Trouble oh trouble it’s here to stay This road is filled with deep holes No map could ever see But wouldn’t we give anything to know That we were trouble free I asked for a few breaks But not special treatment He gave me commitment To fight through my pain I prayed for a leg up He gave me a footstool And a heaven to reach for Again and again Trouble oh trouble still comes knockin’ Trouble oh trouble won’t stay away Trouble oh trouble ain’t no stopping Trouble oh trouble it’s here to stay Trouble oh trouble it’s here to stay

Another date with reality She’s cold and heartless And doesn’t take a minute to consider me She’s always on the take Very rarely gives a thing To keep myself from giving in Takes the biggest bat I can swing My morning mind still sings It’s gonna be a good day Things are gonna go our way Nothing matters cause we’ve got each other Everything’s OK It’s gonna be a good day Sun is either out or it’s gray No matter how hard the wind is blowing I don’t wear it on my face It’s up to us and it’s gonna be a good day The concrete jungle Knocking at my door Whenever I inch my nose ahead It keeps knocking me to the floor We’ll all be dust Blowing in the breeze No point in letting anything Bring your best day to its knees I’m bruised but still believe That it’s gonna be a good day Things are gonna go our way Nothing matters cause we’ve got each other Everything’s OK It’s gonna be a good day The sun is either out or it’s gray No matter how hard the wind is blowing I don’t wear it on my face It’s up to us and it’s gonna be a good day Turn on some music Turn the tide Turn the key Take a ride There's a feast for the taking Make sure nothing’s left Cause it’s all about the kind of day you’re having in your head It’s gonna be a good day Things are gonna go our way Nothing matters cause we’ve got each other Everything’s OK It’s a good day It’s a picture to save No matter how hard the wind is blowing I don’t wear it on my face It’s gonna be a good day Things are gonna go our way Nothing matters cause we’ve got each other Everything’s OK It’s gonna be a good day The sun is either out or it’s gray No matter how hard the wind is blowing I don’t wear it on my face It’s up to us and it’s gonna be a good day It’s up to us and it’s gonna be a good day

Sweet sweet Jesus looking over me Hopes and dreams and blue skies are all I see Eyelids getting lower now Sore is feet and wet is brow Dug myself a hole that’s way too deep Find a way to fight the urge of sleep Lovely lady does look after me Fuels my fires and destroys my grief Some say he’ll throw in the towel Never then, never now Climbed out of the hole that seemed so deep Found a way to fight the urge of sleep A falling star I wish to never be Bright and shining over earth and sea Obstacles will mar my sight Never overcome my fight Like a drum my heart will strongly beat Loudly to avoid the urge of sleep

Broken Wheel 04:32
I’m like a broken wheel Off a random car Just rolling along I never get very far Others pass me by Don’t pay me any mind I keep moving ahead Till I run out of time I’m like a lonely bird That still likes to sing Sits high in a tree It spreads its wings No other voices join The solo melody It’s the sound of a soul That’s truly free I let the rat race pass me by No point in putting up a fight I won’t let worries steal my laughter I gotta keep this dream alive Climb as far as I can climb I won’t live my days any faster Cause in the end it doesn’t matter We all fall off the ladder I’m like a memory Your mind can barely see A small reminder of How things used to be But the future demands That you give all you can And heart strings tie themselves To ghosts that we leave I let the rat race pass me by No point in putting up a fight I won’t let worries steal my laughter I gotta keep this dream alive Climb as far as I can climb I won’t live my days any faster Cause in the end it doesn’t matter We all fall off the ladder I let the rat race pass me by No point in putting up a fight I won’t let worries steal my laughter Gotta keep this dream alive Climb as far as I can climb Won’t live my days any faster Cause in the end it doesn’t matter We all fall off the ladder We’re all broken wheels Off of random cars Just rolling along We rarely get very far

We chased after the sunshine As we danced around this place The clock hands moved as quickly So much done in haste Though the hours still blew by They did not go to waste We served up life on a platter And savored the taste We broke bread We drank wine Pondered our truth Confessed to our lies Ran to our dreams Waited in line Oh what a blessing when we shared time Many questions unanswered Leaving us but to guess What is luck and who is lucky How happy the hearts in our chest What’s too young to know what is love is What age do you know yourself best To sleep is a waste of good time Each day the best of the rest We broke bread We drank wine Pondered our truth Confessed to our lies Ran to our dreams Waited in line Oh what a blessing when we shared time There is cause for celebration I say you were a gift And the memories go racing Like wind they uplift And the earth stays in orbit Round the sun it still swings And the clouds still floating forward In my mind you still sing We broke bread We drank wine Pondered our truth Confessed to our lies Ran to our dreams Waited in line Oh what a blessing when we shared time Oh what a blessing when we shared time

Jenny was a waitress down on 48th New York was rough but she decided to stay She was a southern lass and knew to dream big and she did She was an actress and a dancer at heart A million auditions Only one little part Still she believed one day That she’d be a star Yes she did Oh she did She jumped over the moon Fly pass the sun Grab her a star Off she would run See her name in lights Big neon sign Over the moon She would reside That girl would shine So bright Frustrated was the way she spent most of her days Between shifts she would stand between lines Always hurried to wait And it was all that she could do Just to keep her head up but she did The call came Like it always does Just when she was about to give up The lead part In the biggest of shows Here she goes She jumped over the moon Fly pass the sun Grab her a star Off she would run See her name in lights Big neon sign Over the moon She would reside That girl would shine So bright She jumped over the moon Fly pass the sun Grab her a star Off she would run See her name in lights Big broadway sign Over the moon She would reside She jumped over the moon Fly pass the sun Grab her a star Off she would run See her name in lights Big neon sign Over the moon She would reside That girl would shine That girl would shine So bright So bright

Dream Vacation Eddie Bush I found my place End of the line I found a watch Ran out of time I got a job Then lost my mind I found the sun But then came the night I say no to life on the run The time has come Let’s take a dream vacation So much work to be done Let’s have some fun Let’s take a dream vacation Early to leave I hit the lights I want some peace But they want to fight I finally get loose But money gets tight You say I‘m wrong When once I am right I say no to life on the run The time has come Let’s take a dream vacation So much work to be done Let’s have some fun Let’s take a dream vacation No to life on the run The time has come Let’s take a dream vacation So much work to be done Let’s have some fun Let’s take a dream vacation My friends are drunk I don’t really drink My girl is smart I don’t like to think She likes to dance But I can’t stay on beat What’s worse than that My two left feet I say no to life on the run The time has come Let’s take a dream vacation So much work to be done Let’s have some fun Let’s take a dream vacation I say no to life on the run The time has come Let’s take a dream vacation So much work to be done Let’s have some fun Let’s take a dream vacation

I might be pushing middle age But I still think like a teen In my hair could be a hint of gray But deep down I’m dark and lean But don’t pull out the walker just yet ‘Cause I can still dance all night One day I’ll buy a rocking chair just because it rocks just right When I grow up, I’ll be on time But drive slow enough to see the sights When I grow up, I’ll rise and shine But know better than to party all night When I grow up, I’ll travel light Get around this globe in style I’ll do that stuff, when I grow up It’s true that I’m hard of hearing I like my rock and roll loud If it seems like I’m a little distracted It’s my attention deficit cloud Sometimes I’m a little impatient For a real vacation to start Running hard on an hour of sleep is becoming a lost art When I grow up, I’ll be on time But drive slow enough to see the sights When I grow up, I’ll rise and shine But know better than to party all night When I grow up, I’ll travel light Get around this globe in style I’ll do that stuff, when I grow up I’ll do that stuff, when I grow up All my mirrors pointing towards wrinkles under eyes I don’t know another way but I refuse to hide When I grow up, I’ll be on time But drive slow enough to see the sights When I grow up, I’ll rise and shine Instead of stay late and party all night When I grow up, I’ll travel light Go around this globe in style I’ll do that stuff, when I grow up I’ll do that stuff, when I grow up Yeah when I grow up When I grow up

I had plenty of doubters Saying I’d never add up to much And too many challenges To worry when the words got rough Didn’t make no excuses Just pushed harder when the days got bad Never lost the hunger Success was the best feast I ever had Turn up the volume All the way up to ten As of this moment I’m still in the wind Rev up the engines I’m back on the ride again As of this moment I’m still in the wind Time has always been the enemy This clock is running marathons Age might be reality Take a look here I’m running along Never had an ounce of quit in me Though my mystery remains unsolved Digging for a treasure I found the wealth in my resolve So turn up the volume All the way up to ten As of this moment I’m still in the wind Rev up the engines I’m back on the ride again As of this moment I’m still in the wind Blowing through my hair I lost myself in the moment I didn’t care Turn up the volume All the way up to ten As of this moment I’m still in the wind Rev up the engines I’m back on the ride again As of this moment I’m still in the wind I’m still in the wind I’m still in the wind

Fancy Charlie’s dancing in rags With expensive Italian shoes A street singer starts to smile While she sings the Blues Preacher calls out “you gotta believe in something, or nothing’s true” Cause there’s life in the city after all I think I’ll stay a little longer There’s life in the city after all I walked out of the graveyard Into the delta sun Vampires singing harmony To some French sailor’s song They’ve been here for hundreds of years So they must know something Cause there’s life in the city after all I think I’ll stay a little longer There’s life in the city after all I’ll see the school children laughing again Painting the school bus Yellow as the sun goes down To the water and sparkles like my lover’s smile Like my lover’s smile There’s life in the city after all I think I’ll stay a little longer There’s life in the city after all I think I’ll stay a little longer

When This Month Is Over Eddie Bush When this month is over Lord send me one good day To catch my world and slowly turn Before it rolls away And I’ll stop along my path within To find the reddest rose Its thorns cut like this broken heart And beauty still grows When this month is over Turn the calendar’s page Its date reads as an empty box A number with no face And in that space where time runs free There’ll be no me with you And that’s where my challenge lies Facing the truth When this month is over Your voice will still be heard In a quiet thought or a silent room Though you didn’t speak a word It was you in fact who lifted me To see life and embrace Between night’s moon and morning’s sun Are tears I live to chase

about

In the spring of 2010 I was facing a new chapter in my musical career. One Flew South, the group I had spent the better part of 6 years with, had officially disbanded. It wasn't new territory to me, as I had been a solo artist for the majority of my long career prior to OFS, but it was a melancholy period because of the bond that I shared with Chris Roberts and Royal Reed, my partners in the group, and my friendship with our producer Marcus Hummon and his family. It was odd to be "on my own".

A bright spot in my OFS experience was my great friend Dave Matthews; he and I enjoyed being creative together and we decided to take this new chapter as an opportunity to spread our creative wings and make an album of new material. The process was invigorating, as I dug through my writing demos for the perfect cuts. My youngest brother Alex also played a role, as he couldn't contain his excitement of participating in the act of choosing songs. I met Steve Clark and Ben Bennett during this time as well, and found myself playing in an electric power trio for the first time in years. It was like being in the garage all over again.

I teach a great young group in Charleston called the 3 Dudes, and they invited me -- the Ploch family, that is -- to record in their house. And so it began.

Dave flew into Charleston, and CALLOUSED HANDS was born. In 2010, we recorded 12 songs, crazy with excitement from the sounds we were getting. The songs were chosen from a variety of places; SHAMELESS from the OFS record; THE URGE OF SLEEP from my ‘96 solo record; ROLLERCOASTER RIDE from a demo I recorded in ‘98; BROKEN WHEEL and OVER THE MOON new songs just written. In short, the goal was to make the most complete record possible, for the sake of expression through this art form.

Everything we knew as normal, the passion of the project, the focus Dave and I shared, the desire to take this disc all the way, was drastically changed Dec. 29th, 2010, when my brother Alex and his girlfriend Katie Scott were killed by a drunk driver. Alex was 24, Katie 22, and they had no chance. My life was forever altered.

After the initial shock hit, the only thing I could do was write. Two days after losing them, I wrote WHEN THIS MONTH IS OVER and WE SHARED TIME. As my life was changed, now too was the focus of this record. It became more important to me than just another collection of songs. It was now a reminder of the love my brother had for this music as well as the many memories we created during the planning and creation of the disc while Alex was still very much alive and a true part of it. Today as I see the release of CALLOUSED HANDS come to fruition, I realize that its release is sincerely as much a celebration of my brother as it is a celebration of my creative energy.

Please enjoy this as you will, and know that I poured every ounce of my emotions and musicality into this, for my love of music, for my love of Alex.
